Minnows Eibar and Girona face off in their last match of 2017 on Thursday. Eibar is sitting comfortably in 10th place on the table, while Girona is incredibly one point shy of European football. Eibar has a good record at the Ipurua, winning their past three home matches. But, Girona is undefeated in their last six away matches. So, Thursday’s match should be a great contest.
Girona is still missing Alcalá, Amagat, and Munisa due to injuries. Álex Granell will also miss the match due to a yellow card suspension. Eibar is not faring much better and will be without Rico, León, Juncà, and Ramis.
Girona coach Pablo Machín was cautious as usual at his press conference on Wednesday. “We have been consistent, but we are facing the best Eibar of the season.” He went on to say, “we have to be realistic, our objective is not to suffer.
Meanwhile, Eibar coach José Luis Mendilibar also considers it important to keep adding points. “We will play at home and it is not easy to win two consecutive home matches.” The Spaniard is aware that the season is only about halfway through and maintains his cautious attitude.
“A month ago, nobody thought that we would be here. A bad streak can come, it is a very difficult category. Many times it depends on the calendar. We have been lucky to do things well and win a lot of matches during the last month.”
Both Girona and Eibar are hoping to end 2017 on a high note. Can the Whites and Reds creep back into a European spot? At least until the Valencia – Villarreal match on Saturday. Or will the Gunsmiths put a stop to Girona’s good run of form away from home? The match kicks off on Thursday at 7.30pm local time / 6.30pm BST.
