Ronaldo winning fitness battle ahead of El Clasico

Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo is winning his fitness battle, ahead of Saturday’s El Clasico with Barcelona.

The Portuguese forward raised fears that he would miss Saturday’s ‘must-win’ clash with the current La Liga leaders after skipping the session.

Madrid confirmed the Ballon d’Or winner worked away from the group after reports claimed he suffered a calf injury in the Club World Cup final win over Brazilian side Gremio.

Ronaldo scored the winner in that game and looked bang in form ahead of Saturday’s game at the Santiago Bernabeu, however, the build-up will now be focused on his recovery.

Madrid head into the game, 11 points behind Barca, who have not lost a single league game all season.

Zinedine Zidane’s side had the advantage prior to the start of the current season, having beaten Barca over two-legs in the Spanish Supercopa.

Compared to arch rival Lionel Messi, Ronaldo has just four league goals after a stuttering start to the season.

Madrid come into the game off the back of a second successive Club World Cup victory, where Cristiano Ronaldo’s free-kick was enough to seal the title.

Whilst, Barcelona approach the game having beaten Deportivo La Coruna 4-0 thanks to braces from Luis Suarez and Paulinho.

Sergio Busquets, who missed that game is expected to return to the Barca eleven, whilst Gareth Bale’s return to fitness is expected to see him line up with Karim Benzema and and Ronaldo, if fit.
