Barcelona utility man Sergi Roberto’s future has been questioned after Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho made contact with the Catalan club.
Diario Gol report that Mourinho has contacted his former employees over a potential bid for the Spanish international.
The Catalan giants are currently preparing new contracts for duo Gerard Pique and Roberto, who has been linked with a move away from the Camp Nou in recent times.
The new offers are expected to keep both at the club until 2022 as Robert Fernandez casts an eye on the long term as they seek to avoid another exit like that of Neymar this summer.
That is the case for Sergi Roberto in particular. The homegrown midfielder’s release clause currently stands at just 40 million euros, and with several European clubs interested, there is concern that an English club would not hesitate to fork out such a fee, with United extremely keen.
Roberto, like Pique, has been a regular in Ernesto Valverde’s side as they have made a perfect start to their La Liga campaign.
“My contract renewal is on track,” Roberto told a news conference before Barca’s Champions League game against Sporting Lisbon last month.
“I’ve been a Barcelona fan since I was little. There are always talks to be had, but I’m sure we’ll come to an agreement.”
The versatile Spaniard has also had more game time in his natural midfield role, only filling in at right-back when Nelson Semedo has been rested. That could prove vital to keeping him happy long-term.
