In an interview with French radio station Foot Mercato, agent Jose Iribarren has stated that his client, Atletico Madrid winger Nicolas Gaitan, will leave the club during the January transfer window, frustrated at the lack of game time he’s experienced this season.
The Argentine arrived in Madrid last summer following a €25 million deal with Portuguese side, Benfica. In his first season at the club, Gaitan made 23 appearances in La Liga, scoring 3 goals, as well as 4 appearances and a goal in the Copa Del Rey and featuring in 3 of the side’s Champions League matches. This season, the 29 year old has made 12 appearances for the club, but is hoping a move away will enhance his chances of cementing a place in Argentina’s World Cup squad.
Iribarren was adamant that Gaitan would be departing the Wanda Metropolitano in the new year. “Yes, he’ll undoubtedly leave Atletico in January” he told the station. “He has a lot of concrete offers. Nicolas was an important player when he played in Argentina, at Benfica and with the national team. He can’t continue in these conditions. If he can’t play a string of matches, nor win the coach’s trust. A player wants to play. We’re going to see with Atletico which solution we can find.”
Fellow La Liga side Valencia and Manchester United have been long term admirers of the winger, with both clubs rumoured to have considered offers for him during his time in Portugal. Tottenham Hotspur were also linked with the player in January and news of his availability is bound to attract the attention of a number of European clubs over the next few weeks.
