Ill discipline and some dramatic acting from Aymeric Laporte proved the pivotal moment in a feisty encounter between Real Betis and Athletic Club with both sides desperate for the three points.
It was Betis who got off to the better start, and almost got on the scoresheet first as Iago Herrerin palmed the ball off the line with home players appealing for a goal, believing the ball to have crossed the line.
In an end to end opening half hour, Inigo Lekue also saw his effort cleared off the line as Athletic Bilbao mounted the pressure with chance after chance coming their way.
The turning point came when Jordi Amat lost his head in the box, lashing out with a wild kick at Aymeric Laporte on the floor. That saw Amat sent off and gave Raul Garcia the chance to give Athletic the lead, and he duly obliged.
After cooling down at the break, Betis put up more of a fight in the second half, even if they couldn’t find a way back into the game.
In the end, it was a comical own goal from Zouhair Feddal which saw him head past his own goalkeeper to condemn the Seville based side to defeat on home turf.
