Athletic Club have claimed they have received no offers for young goalkeeper Kepa, despite reports he could be set to join Real Madrid.
Long have Madrid been keen admirers of the young Basque stopper and it has been reported that a deal has been completed which will see him arrive at the Santiago Bernabeu in January.
Spanish daily Marca reported the deal earlier in December, which they said would be formally completed following Madrid’s participation in the Club World Cup in Abu Dhabi.
That has now past and no announcement has been made and Athletic have been quick to claim that no offers have been received for the young stopper.
“There has been no offer from Madrid or any club,” club president Josu Urrutia told a press conference.
“We know of the reports but we have not been negotiating with any club for him and there has been nothing from the player’s representatives to suggest otherwise.
“We are not a selling club and for a player to leave he must first state his intention to move on and then his buyout clause must be met.
“We do not yet have an answer on a new contract but we must remain positive and our job is to exhaust every possible avenue to allow him to stay and renew.
The door is not closed and this is a long process but we must continue to be patient.”
Whilst current number one Keylor Navas has been performing well; Madrid officials have been interested in a number of options who they feel can provide a long-term option.
Man United’s David De Gea was red hot favourite to become the long term replacement for Iker Casillas, who left the club two summers back for Porto, but Spain’s number one has now seemingly been demoted as the Spanish club’s preferred choice.
With Madrid’s desire to sign a new first choice keeper developing fast, it would see the new signing move straight into the starting eleven at the Santiago Bernabeu, leaving Navas’ future in doubt.
Current back-up keeper Kiko Casilla has been told he can leave the club in January.
