Real Betis have missed out on the signing of Argentine defender Nicolas Tagliafico, who is set to join Dutch side Ajax.
The 25-year-old will see his current contract expire in December 2018 but his desire to move to Europe was the prompt needed for Betis to show interest.
Betis boss Quique Setien is desperate to sure up his defence for the latter part of the season, but he will now be forced to look elsewhere after Tagliafico chose to join Ajax.
Estadio Deportivo report that Betis saw a bid fall short of the £4.5m deal agreed between Ajax and Independiente.
Tagliafico is no stranger to Spanish football, having spent time with Real Murcia, whilst his main stint in the professional game has been in the Argentine top flight, first with Banfield, before moving to Independiente in 2015.
Sitting 14th in the La Liga standings, Betis have conceded 31 goals in their opening 17 games, including five against Eibar and Cadiz in November.
Betis will return from the winter break to face Sevilla on Saturday 6th, looking to bounce back from the 2-0 defeat to Athletic Club two weeks ago.
Sevilla have just appointed former AC Milan boss Vincenzo Montella after sacking Eduardo Berizzo before Christmas.
