Newly appointed Sevilla boss Vincenzo Montella has discussed his enthusiasm and happiness at being given the chance to coach in La Liga.
Shortly after the sacking of Argentine Eduardo Berizzo before the winter break, the Andalusian club looked for a new man to take charge and the appointment of Montella has now been confirmed.
The former Italian striker spent time with AC Milan in a coaching prior to his move to Sevilla, where he will sign a contract until 2019 and confirm the deal on Friday evening.
The 43-year-old is expected to by assisted by former Sevilla midfielder Enzo Maresca, who won the UEFA Cup with the club in 2006.
Before jetting off to Spain, Montella told press that he was happy and excited about the chance to coach in Spain.
“I am enthusiastic and happy. I did not expect this, this came all of a sudden, ” he told Sky Sport Italia, shortly before boarding a plane to Spain on Friday.
“I am enthusiastic to land in Spain with a very big club, who have marvellous fans. I have faced them in the Europa League with Fiorentina, it was hard to speak even on the bench due to the noise caused by the fans.
“In Spain, you have to play to entertain the crowd. It will be a beautiful challenge.”
Montella’s first game in charge of Sevilla will come against Cadiz in the Copa del Rey on the 3rd of January, before meeting rivals Real Betis on Saturday 6th in La Liga.
Former boss Berizzo spent less than six months at the club following his arrival from Celta Vigo.
The Argentine boss had an up and down spell with the Andalusian club, having been diagnosed with cancer before December and undergoing surgery.
