Atletico Madrid CEO Gil Marin has seemingly confirmed that captain Gabi and fellow veteran Juanfran will stay at the Wanda Metropolitano for the 2018/19 season.
Both players see their contracts expire in the summer, with no official confirmation of a new agreement to keep them at the club.
However, speaking to Onda Cero radio station in their El Transistor show, Marin revealed that they have already put pen to paper on new contracts.
“Gabi signed a long time ago, it’s already done,” he said.
“He is the most exceptional person I have met in a changing room.
“He’s guaranteed to be here next season and from there he can decide what he wants to do.”
Juanfran has also extended his stay at the club.
Both player have been regular staples in Diego Simeone’s line-ups as they have enjoyed great success in recent years, though both have become less important this season with younger players like Thomas Partey filling in for their absences.
That had led to doubts over whether they would remain at the club, but Marin’s latest statement will allay those fears and instead indicates a clear commitment to two men who have become symbolic of the club.
Their new contracts are expected to last until the summer of 2019, with the opportunity for all parties to consider their future again in 12 months time.
Atletico, who were unbeaten in the league until the final match day of the 2017 year, are looking to push Barcelona for the title this season.
The pending return of Diego Costa and signing of Vitolo have added an extra boost to Simeone’s options.
Whilst, Luciano Vietto has left the club for Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon.
