Lionel Messi could come face to face with the country in which he has made his name for the first time on the international stage as MARCA say that the Argentine FA consider the deal for a friendly between Spain and Argentina to be virtually sealed.
It’s thought that the game will be played on 27th March 2018, at Atletico Madrid’s Wanda Metropolitano stadium.
The date had originally been allocated as the time for a game against Holland, who have failed to qualify for the World Cup, but the Spanish FA are now attempting to rearrange that fixture for June before they travel to Russia for the 2018 World Cup.
Previous speculation that the game may take place at the Camp Nou, in what would be Spain’s first fixture in Barcelona since the 1992 Olympics, is now being downplayed.
The fixture will see the return of the likes of Jorge Sampaoli, Angel Di Maria and possibly even Mauro Icardi or Gonzalo Higuain, all of whom have previously played in La Liga in the past.
Both sides have qualified for the 2018 World Cup and it could be an intriguing duel to face a different footballing style in preparation for their respective groups.
Four days before the proposed date, Spain will travel to Dusseldorf for their first fixture of 2018 against reigning world champions Germany, whilst Argentina will play Italy in Nice on the same evening.
