Atletico Madrid beat Getafe 2-0 on Saturday afternoon in a game that saw Diego Costa score but also be sent off in his first league game back for the club.
The Brazilian born striker has been training behind the scenes for six months after his return back the Spanish capital club, but his return to action following Atleti’s transfer ban has been typically dramatic.
Costa, who returned against Lleida on Wednesday evening in the Copa del Rey, where he scored – was on the score-sheet again as Diego Simeone’s side picked up three vital points to keep the pressure on league leaders Barcelona.
Angel Correa gave Simeone’s side the lead at the Wanda Metropolitano, before Costa would seal the points just over the hour mark.
However, having booked on the 62nd minute, the former Chelsea man was shown a second yellow for his celebration which saw him hug supporters.
The 29-year-old will now miss the visit to Eibar next week, but he will be eligible to face Lleida in the return Copa leg next week.
The defeat for visitors Getafe sees them remain in eighth place, but a victory for any of six teams, including Real Sociedad and Athletic Club – could see them drop down as far as 15th at the end of this weekend.
