Leganes rise into 8th place after an impressive 1-0 win over Real Sociedad at the Butarque.
It was a tight and competitive game with the home side pressing La Real’s backline looking for mistakes. They were rewarded early on, Llorente coughing up the ball under pressure allowing Leganes striker Beauvue to have a shot. It deflected off a defender and fell into the path of Gabriel Pires who took another shot that needed a good save from Real Sociedad goalkeeper Rulli.
The home side were committed defensively and Real Sociedad really struggled to break them down, despite dominating possession. Alvaro Odriozola was the spark for Real Sociedad’s first meaningful attack, beating his marker to break into the box and set the ball up for Oyarzabal, whose shot from close range was saved by Cuéllar. La Real had another chance to score through Illaramendi whose strike from distance needing a firm hand from the Leganes goalkeeper once more.
Leganes came out after the half time break looking the more threatening, challenging Rulli at his near post within the first couple of minutes. They then had their best chance since the early minutes, a Leganes corner saw the man on the near post flick on, only to hit the bar.
The goal finally did come for the home side, Diego Llorente once again struggling under pressure, gave up a free kick in a dangerous position. The cross is wicked and is met by Gabriel Pires, who knocks home at the far post. Surprisingly, Leganes didn’t sit on their 1-0 lead and nearly had a second, Real Sociedad defender Granero putting off the striker, whose shot skims wide of the mark. Another chance for the host to double their lead followed shortly after, Rulli carelessly giving the ball away to the opposition outside the 6-yard box, the shot whistling wide.
Real Sociedad haven’t won a league away game since October and the final whistle condemned them to a third defeat in their last five games, they now sit 11th. Leganes continue their good form and shuttle up to 8th with the rest of today’s games still to play
