Real Madrid were held 2-2 at home to a lower league side for the second round running as Numancia twice came from behind to leave the capital bursting with pride.
Real’s three goal lead from the first leg had all but guaranteed their progression to the quarter finals and when Lucas Vazquez headed home just 11 minutes in, it looked as though it would be another comfortable evening for Zinedine Zidane’s men.
In stoppage time at the end of the first half however, Numancia found themselves level on the night. A quick breakaway was rounded off with a sidefooted finish by Guillermo from Marc Mateu’s pass.
The visitors were never out of the game but fell behind again when Vazquez notched his second with a close range.
They had the last say on the night when Guillermo grabbed his second too with a wonderful header from the middle of the box.
Real go through on aggregate, but there will surely be questions asked of their performance.
Nereo Champagne was the hero for Leganes as Los Pepineros sneaked past Villarreal on away goals.
With Leganes ahead 1-0 from the first leg, Villarreal knew they had to score and created numerous chances but most were denied by Champagne in the away goal.
Pablo Fornals was first to be denied when the ball fell for him in the box but the keeper blocked his shot.
Fornals saw another shot parried away and Enes Unal was then sent through on goal but Champagne managed to turn the ball wide and his side soon took advantage of his good work by taking the lead.
Dani Raba’s shot for the hosts was blocked on the edge of the box with the ball rebounding to Jose Naranjo whose pass sent Nabil El Zhar clear and the forward showed great composure to chip the ball over Mariano Barbosa into the net.
That left Villarreal coming back out for the second half needing to score three without reply and within two minutes of the restart they had number one.
Raba received the ball at the back post and showed great control before slamming the ball into the back of the net via the bar.
Fornals yet again was denied by the keeper as his low shot was saved and then cleared with Villarreal throwing everything at the visitors.
Substitute Denis Cheryshev made it 2-1 on the night in the 89th minute when he fired home from a cutback but The Yellow Submarine couldn’t take advantage in stoppage time and Leganes made the quarter finals for the first time in their history.
The other game saw Alaves wrap up their tie with Formentera thanks to goals from Erdin Demirovic and Alfonso Pedraza.
After a quiet first half, Demirovic opened the scoring ten minutes into the second period with a neat finish from Ruben Sobrino’s pass.
Sobrino then hit the post with Alvaro Medran also going close before Pedraza’s low shot secured the win in stoppage time.
Alaves 2-0 Formentera (Agg 5-1)
Villarreal 2-1 Leganes (Agg 2-2) Leganes through on away goals
