Costa appeal rejected

Diego Costa’s appeal over his second yellow card against Getafe last weekend has been rejected, meaning that the Atletico Madrid forward will miss Saturday evening’s game away versus Eibar.

The striker had already picked up a yellow card but despite this he still ran into the crowd to celebrate scoring Atleti’s second goal in their 2-0 win and was subsequently shown his second yellow and then a red.

The Appeals Committee defended its decision saying Atleti didn’t prove an error in the official’s call but rather they “only seem to disagree with the referee’s assessment of the action.”

FIFA game rule 12 states that if a player approaches the spectators in this way “that the player should be reprimanded” and as Costa clearly broke this rule, the referee had no option but to produce the second yellow card.

As well as the suspension, Atletico Madrid have to pay a fine of 350 euros and Costa himself a fine of 600 euros.

The forward was making his first La Liga appearance since rejoining his former club from Chelsea. As mentioned he did score, but was of course then sent off. Atleti won the game 2-0.

Costa scored 66 goals in 137 games for the Madrid club in his last spell and also had loans at Real Valladolid and Rayo Vallecano.
