Barcelona masterclass destroys Celta – Copa del Rey Round UpJanuary 11, 2018
Barcelona became the final team into Friday’s Copa del Rey quarter final draw as a first half blitz saw them beat Celta Vigo 5-0 at the Camp Nou.
The tie was finely poised after last week’s 1-1 draw in Galicia and Celta were well in with a shout of getting through but within 15 minutes the tie was over.
Jordi Alba’s bouncing ball across the edge of the box was fired home by Lionel Messi with the same duo linking up again two minutes later as Messi swept the full back’s cut back into the corner.
Roles were reversed on 28 minutes as Messi’s angled ball found Alba who sneaked a shot in at the front post.
Pione Sisto was then short with a back pass and Luis Suarez punished it by firing a shot high into the net to make it four in 30 minutes.
Barca took their foot of the gas in the second half with Messi and Iniesta both being replaced with one eye on Sunday’s trip to the Anoeta to face bogey team Real Sociedad and created few chances although Suarez did hit the post.
Ivan Rakitic headed home a late corner to put the icing on the cake and Barca progress 6-1 on aggregate.
Earlier, Barca’s city rivals Espanyol had overturned their first leg deficit to get past Levante 3-2 on aggregate.
They had to score twice to get through after conceding two away goals in the 2-1 first leg defeat and just quarter an hour they had their first.
Leo Baptistao racing clear to dink the ball into the net.
Gerard Moreno then smacked the post as Espanyol continued to threaten on the break but he added a second before the break when Tono failed to clear by booting the ball against his goalkeeper allowing Moreno to score.
Levante pressed and pressed in the second half but couldn’t break through and Espanyol make the last eight.
Sevilla survived a scare to get past Cadiz 2-1, 4-1 on aggregate.
David Barral slammed a shot against the post and Moha then spurned a one on one as Cadiz attacked and they were made to pay before half time.
Joaquin Correa’s shot was saved but Wissam Ben Yedder finished off the rebound.
Correa headed home a corner to secure Sevilla’s place in the quarters but Alvaro Garcia’s lob four minutes from time gave Cadiz a consolation and the forward then rounded the keeper but could only hit the side netting as the visitors refused to go down without a fight.
