Top 4 kept apart as Copa draw throws up two derbies – Copa del Rey draw

The Copa del Rey draw took place this morning and saw the top four in La Liga all kept apart with derbies for both Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Real were second out of the hat and they will face fellow Madrid side Leganes in the quarter finals. Los Blancos defeated Segunda side Numancia 5-2 on aggregate in the last 16 despite a draw at home in the second leg and will be clear favourites to beat Leganes who beat Villarreal on away goals.

Lega took a 1-0 lead to the Estadio de la Ceramica for the second leg and despite losing 2-1 in that second game, Nabil El Zhar’s goal on the night was enough to see them safely through to the quarters.

There will also be a Catalan derby in the last eight with Barcelona being drawn against Espanyol. Barca produced a masterclass in their second leg thrashing of Celta Vigo as goals from Lionel Messi (2), Luis Suarez, Jordi Alba and Ivan Rakitic saw them win 5-0, progressing 6-1 on aggregate.

Cross city rivals Espanyol won 2-0 away at Levante in their second leg to overturn a 2-1 deficit from the first leg and they will relish the prospect of a local derby with the Camp Nou side.

Perhaps the tie of the round however sees Sevilla and Atletico Madrid go head to head over the two legs, a tie that will see Vitolo return to the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, just months after forcing an exit to Atleti.

Sevilla were comfortable 4-1 aggregate winners over Cadiz of La Liga 1|2|3 in the last round but will face a much tougher test against an Atleti side who also had things their own way in the last 16, beating third tier Lleida Esportiu 7-0.

The final match sees La Liga highflyers Valencia take on a struggling Alaves side but the Basques have been impressive in the cup so far defeating Getafe and Formentera and will fancy their chances, particularly having the second leg at home.

Valencia were comfortable victors against Las Palmas with a magnificent hat-trick from Luciano Vietto stealing the show in their second leg win.

All four ties will be played over two legs with the second team in each tie having the home advantage in the second leg.

The first legs will be played this coming midweek with the second legs taking place a week later.
