So where’s Malaga’s owner been all this time?

With Malaga facing the biggest sporting crisis during his reign as owner, Sheikh Abdullah Al-Thani still hasn’t shown his face in the city since returning to Qatar in May to observe Ramadan. Fans are unimpressed by the sheikh’s lack of involvement and have frequently called for him to leave the club, with chants of ‘Al-Thani, vete ya!’ ringing around La Rosaleda with alarming frequency as the side faces up to the very real prospect of relegation. So where is he? And who’s running the club in his absence? Since doing away with…

Malaga, officially planning for life in Segunda

Though not outwardly discussing the possibility of relegation, Malaga are already working hard behind the scenes to prepare for what now seems an inevitability. According to Malaga-based newspaper Diario SUR, work is already under way two-fold in identifying targets for the summer transfer window, with both relegation and possible salvation in mind. The policy was already in evidence in the January window with sporting director Mario Husillos bringing in midfielders Mehdi Lacen and Manuel Iturra and defender Ignasi Miquel with the idea that they would be involved with the squad next…

After seven years of hold-ups, building on Malaga’s long-awaited Academy project is set to start after the project was officially presented this week. Malaga 1-2 Valencia: Marcelino masterclass helps Valencia to comeback win

Valencia came back from a goal down to win late in a tricky tie against bottom side Malaga on Saturday night. The hosts bagged the go-ahead goal in the first half, but a tactical switch from Marcelino and a red card for Ignasi Miquel meant Los Che left Andalusia with all three points. Backed by the home crowd, Jose Gonzalez’s team started strongest with debutant Maxime Lestienne making his debut on the right-hand side, providing some of the pace which has been lacking for much of the season so far….

Malaga 0-1 Atletico Madrid: Griezmann’s first minute strike enough for Simeone’s men

Antoine Griezmann scored the only goal of the game as Atletico Madrid beat Malaga on Saturday afternoon. Diego Simeone’s side sit behind league leaders Barcelona and seem to be the only threat to the Catalan side’s La Liga title challenge. Having picked up points on Barca last week, Simeone’s men did the same this week, later watching Barca draw with Getafe at the Camp Nou on Sunday evening. Griezmann, who argued with the Wanda Metropolitano crowd last weekend in the win over Valencia – was the man of the moment,…

Must-win clash at the bottom of the table as Malaga travel to Las Palmas

Bottom side Malaga travel to second-bottom Las Palmas for the Monday night La Liga fixture this match day. Both sides know only a win will do if either are to avoid relegation to Segunda at the end of the season and a result in the Estadio Gran Canaria could be a springboard for a bid for survival. Both sides were very busy in the transfer market but the most likely debutant is Las Palmas’ Martin Aguirregaray who could fill in at left-back. For Malaga, who signed eight players this winter,…

Maxime Lestienne and Isaac Success join on busy deadline day for Malaga

With their La Liga survival on the line, Malaga have moved to further strengthen their attacking line with the deadline day signings of Maxime Lestienne and Isaac Success. Lestienne, who normally operates from the left, will bring speed and delivery from wide areas. The 25-year-old joins on loan until the end of the season from Russian side Rubin Kazan. Despite his age, Lestienne has already had something of a nomadic career. After a successful spell in his native Belgium with Club Brugge, Lestienne completed a big-money move to Qatar with Al-Arabi….
