As Liga 123 moves towards it’s penultimate week, we found out the first of the teams who will be playing La Liga football next season, as well as those who have to wait at least another round to discover their fate.  The floodgates opened with 38 goals being scored over the week’s matches, with the home teams dominating by winning eight out of the 11 fixtures.  There was an eight-goal thriller between Gimnàstic and Cultural, and four teams scored four or more goals in their matches. Huesca (2nd) earned promotion…

Liga 123 Week 39 Preview: Title and playoff picture still wide open

There is a meeting of teams with contrasting aims on Sunday night.  Rayo Vallecano (1st) are looking to consolidate their lead at the top of Liga 123.  They currently have a two-point advantage and are chasing their sixth successive win as they welcome Córdoba (19th) to Vallecas on Sunday who have gone two matches without a win after picking up 20 of 27 points available prior to this slide.  However, José Ramón Sandoval’s side should not be ruled out as they are fighting to stave off relegation and will be…

Liga 123 Week 38: Goals hard to come by but no shortage of action

Goals were in short supply in Week 38 of Spain’s second tier, with just 20 being netted in one of the lowest scoring weeks of the season so far.  Despite this, the goals that did go in ranged from the sublime to the ridiculous.  As always, the action was still captivating as the race for the title, and safety, nears its conclusion. Granada could not have wished for a more difficult opponent for their first match since the dismissal of Pedro Morilla after just six weeks in charge.  New manager…

Granada sack coach Pedro Morilla

Granada have announced the dismissal of coach Pedro Morilla, after just 43 days at the helm. Morilla was appointed on the 19th March, following the termination of José Luis Oltra’s contract. A 2-1 loss at Real Oviedo had given El Grana their third defeat in a row, which spelled the end for Oltra, and the board made the change in an attempt to keep pace with the promotion race. Morilla’s first match in charge came in Week 32, at home to Numancia, and gave many reasons to be optimistic about…

Liga 123 Week 37 Review: Top three all win

Rayo Vallecano maintained their slender lead atop Spain’s second tier as they earned their fourth win in a row, a 3-1 victory at home to Tenerife.  As is now almost customary, Raúl de Tomás was on the scoresheet, scoring for the fourth match in a row.  The prolific hitman bagged his 23rd of the campaign and has found the net sixteen times in his last fourteen outings. He opened the scoring on 38 minutes, stealing in front of his marker to deftly guide Adri Embarba’s cross past Tenerife ‘keeper Dani…

As we move towards the closing stages of the season, there is still all to play for at both ends of the table.  The championship is wide open and could go any one of three ways.  Rayo Vallecano, Sporting Gijón and Huesca are the front runners and, behind them, there is an almighty battle raging on for the play-off spots.  Cádiz, Numancia and Real Zaragoza currently occupy them, but Real Oviedo, Granada, Real Valladolid, Osasuna and Tenerife all have genuine claims to progress. Liga 123 Week 36 Review: Rayo back on top

Yet again, Liga 123 produced controversy, great goals, basement battles and another change at the top of the league.  Here are the headlines. RAYO GO TOP it was all change again as Rayo Vallecano returned to the summit of Liga 123 following a 3-2 win over Barcelona B, but they were made to work for it by a relegation-threatened side without a win in ten matches coming into this one.  Raúl de Tomás scored in each half, either side of Monchu’s equaliser, to take his personal tally to 22 for…

Liga 123 Week 36: Sporting looking to reclaim the lead

The early kick-off today pits Alcorcón, who are 16th, against 11th-placed Osasuna at the Santo Domingo stadium.  The hosts are looking to try and put daylight between themselves and the relegation-threatened teams as they sit just three points off the drop zone.  A win today would see them rise one place past Gimnàstic who held Numancia to a goalless draw yesterday.  Julio Velázquez’s side had a disappointing draw against second-bottom Lorca last week, where they scored after only two minutes but lead for just eight minutes before conceding the equaliser. …

Liga 123 Week 36: Real Zaragoza looking to bounce back

Real Zaragoza entertain Almería today, looking to put last week’s 2-1 loss to Rayo behind them.  The Zaragozans are a team with genuine promotion credentials and shot up the table thanks to a run of seven wins and a draw before they were ambushed by last-placed Sevilla Atlético four weeks ago. This seemed to knock their confidence slightly and they laboured past lowly Cultural in their next match, before edging Huesca with a score of 1-0 in each game.  Last week’s loss saw them drop out of the playoff places,…

Liga 123 Week 35: Reus end their losing run, whilst Barca B are in real trouble

In the opening contest, Reus ended a two-match losing slide and pulled off a shock in the process as they overcame fourth-placed Cádiz 1-0 at the Estadi Municipal.  Dejan Lekic’s strike five minutes into the second half was the difference.  The first half was goalless, but the Gaditanos felt they should have had a penalty as Reus captain Jesús Olmo appeared to handle a cross in his own box, although the appeals were waved away. The hosts had a claim for a penalty turned down too, early in the second…
